Are You Allergic To Milk Product? How to Prevent Further Side Effect

Editorials Huge Health Medicals - 17:34:00
Milk products or dairy products refers to all products containing milk or produced from milk., for example milk butter, Yogurt, cheese, ice cream. The major components of milk are water, fat, protein, carbohydrate (lactose), and minerals (ash). However, there are numerous other highly
important micro-nutrients such as vitamins, essential amino acids, and trace minerals. Indeed, more than 250 chemical compounds have been identified in milk.

WHAT IS LACTOSE INTOLERANCE?
Apart from the nutrients accompanied from the consumption of a dairy product, some people may suffer some ill reaction as a result of consuming milk rich product. Lactose intolerance is the inability of an adult to digest the sugar lactose that is present in milk and milk products. The individual experiences side effects after consuming a dairy product due to a deficiency in an enzyme lactase (Hypolactesia). Babies with congenital lactase deficiency also suffer effects when they are fed with human milk. The enzyme lactase is responsible in digesting the sugar lactose in milk, complete digestion yields two sugars glucose and galactose, but in deficiency of lactase the sugar lactose accumulates resulting in some side effects.

SYMPTOMS OF LACTOSE INTOLERANCE.
Symptoms may appear 1 – 3 hours after consumption of dietary product
  • Rumbling stomach shortly after consumption
  • Abdominal bloating and cramps
  • Generating excessive gas in the stomach (flatulence)
  • Looseness of the bowels resulting in diarrhea
  • Feeling of “about to vomit” or even vomiting affect consumption of a considerable amount.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
Infants that a still breast feeding may suffer lactose intolerance because of their reduced production of lactase enzyme and may experience some of the above symptoms but later in life or immediately after stoppage of weaning required lactase concentration may be produced.
The deficiency in lactase enzyme can be influenced greatly by variations in genetic makeup and can result in variation in dairy product tolerance within a home.
Lactase deficiency do not necessarily mean those individuals cannot produce lactase  but are only able to produce less than the required concentration.
The severity of the side effect depends on the quantity of diary product consumed

MANAGEMENT AND CURE FOR LACTOSE INTOLERANCE
Following the below guidelines and help in stopping or minimizing side effects resulting from the consumption of dairy products.

REDUCE QUANTITY CONSUMED AT A TIME
Some lactose intolerant individuals can tolerate certain amount/quantity of lactose in their diet with little or no side effect. For individuals working on managing this effect, reducing the quantity of dairy product consumed at a time can be helpful, Instead of consuming a heavy meal, spread it into little quantity till available quantity is exhausted through small portion meal per time. The quantity of milk consumed is directly proportional to the severity of the symptom/reaction.

CHANGE THE TYPE OF MILK PRODUCT
Not all products contain the same amount of lactose so changing from one product to another till a product with little or no effect is decided. Other components of the product may tend to help in reducing the effect, for example presence of higher vitamins, other sugars, and in some cases if the product is liquid effect may be higher than a dried form of the same product. Dried dairy products may not have much adverse effect on the individual said researchers but may still depend on the quantity consumed at a time.

CONSUME WITH COMPLEX CARBOHYDRATE
This has been the most applicable and functional method for tolerating Milk products. Mixing dairy products with complex carbohydrates (those with high dietary fibres) like cereals, whole bread, and so on can help stop any side effect as a result of consumption of dairy products. Research Suggest that dietary fibre triggers bacteria to synthesis lactase that help digest the lactose leaving the individual without effects. (Read Functional foods and Healthy benefits)

AVOID LACTOSE RICH PRODUCTS
If none of the aforementioned guidelines do not work for you then you may consider avoiding consumption of any amount of lactose containing products. To achieve this, careful checking of diet and food labels is made by the individual (Read understanding food labels as a good nutrition map habit)
Avoiding milk products can lead to deficiency in the nutrient composition of milk like calcium and other minerals, vitamins and protein. To avoid disorders from arising as a result of the deficiency in any of these components, the individual need to consume varieties of diet from vegetables, fruits, meats and fishes. (Read Nutritional aspects of Diet)

DRUGS

The last option you may consider will be meeting your physician for medical advice and drugs. He may prescribe any of the approved replacement therapy for you, and these require you to take the drug before or immediately after consuming dairy product. Some people can begin producing higher concentration of the enzyme lactase naturally after a long time of taking the lactase replacement therapy.
